Fibre optic is used primarily for network backbones. Made from flexible, optically efficient strands of glass coated with a layer of rubber tubing, fibre uses photons of light instead of electrons for sending and receiving data. Although fibre is physically capable of carrying Terabits of data per second(In measuring transmission speed, a terabit is one trillion binary digits, or 1000000000000) the hardware available today to generate the necessary signalling can only handle a few gigabits of information per second.

Fibre cables come in many different shapes and sizes with a myriad of connector types. The most common form of fibre optic cable in use today is a multi-mode fibre cable (MMF) with a 62.5 micron fibre optic core. Single-mode fibre cabling is another form of fibre cabling that is far more efficient than multi-mode, however it is more expensive.
